Why does EU is heading towards the future that many of its peoples hated?

This is supposed to be a fricking free continent, for all we know. And then, they started to think that Draconian laws like this suddenly being a good idea, what the hell happened?

At this moment, I would pray that China or every other nation were able to sufficiently develop their own ram industry to break the monopoly!
