Yup, that’s correct. It doesn’t matter that it begins with a vowel, what matters is if it sounds like a vowel. Likewise, “an university” is also incorrect, whereas “an hour” is correct.
This is still salvageable by pronouncing it as “an earl”.
Well, I’m sure at least some person out there pronounces it that way, but I’ve certainly never met one!
