It’s not that Tom Nook is a good person, or better than any other lender.

You just don’t notice as much when the economy is so busted you can afford a mortgage by selling shells you found on the beach.

Animal Crossing represents the dream of a society where labour is well compensated and you can meet all your financial needs with ample money left over.

My head canon is that there isn’t truly a capitalism on the island and that Tom Nook is doing all this to help you, the weird human who needs to accumulate value, to acclimate to the town. Ultimately, selling fruit just guarantees people around you have food and in return sometimes they give you stuff they find or make.

That makes sense. I mean, how suspicious would you be if he just gave you everything for free?

As soon as the humans find out you’re doing a communism or whatever, you risk “liberation” so… best just to play up the business aspects. 😭

I reject this notion. The entire idea requires accepting that humanity needs to be subjugated to survive. This is what authoritarians believe and the fact that everyone just accepts it because a movie presents the concept with cool actions sequences is very disappointing.

The sequels are trash. Terrible weak storytelling that was greenlit because capitalist wanted to milk the success of the first film.

The problems of humanity cannot be solved with emotions, good or bad. Even if the reason is fated lovers. That’s the lizard brain being tickled. We suppressed ourselves with this nonsense. At least we get warm fuzzies while we do it, right? Totally worth all the suffering.

The first movie was ground breaking and had actual cultural impact. The sequels were action slop.

Nook never charges interest and gives you infinite time to pay him back with no threat of foreclosure, that makes him better than any other mortgage lender in existence.

He employs children to perform child labour for him to make him money, he is at the heart of basically any get rich quick opportunity he can take, he invades your privacy, installing apps on your phone without asking, and putting things in your pockets without asking, and he’s literally a tanuki, a trickster spirit commonly associated with greed :P /hj

Yeah, but the children yearn for collecting fruit 😋

Installing shit on your phone is pretty wack tho, forgor about that. Treating all tanuki as greedy capitalist bastards is rude /j
