I appreciate that every post doesn’ have 3000 comments. I can actually contribute to a discussion and get heard.
Also, on Reddit when you post a comment that gets even a little bit popular and visible, you always get some asshole who misrepresents your point and wants to pick a virtual fight.
I never know when to engage or ignore.
In any case, it’s never satisfying. Ignore and you feel bad. Engage and you feel bad.
Lemmy is nicer. Way less assholes.
Lemmy is nicer. Way less assholes.
It’s way fewer assholes, idiot
humour
If you can’t tell, this is a joke
Idk, I always thought that about 1 asshole per human was a good ratio to have, it’s a proven design
What about animals?
Definitely more than one animal per human, animals are cool!
yeah there’s plenty to go around :)
For now :'(
Always clarify or add an /s. It’s not worth it. Good job
You’re wrong. People always understand sarcasm.
Lol. You’re right!
personally i dont take grammar seriously. u somehow need to chill
Somehow
There’s certainly some of that here, although much less than Reddit and various other popular places on the internet. Something I’ve noticed about the disagreements here though, is that they don’t instantly devolve into abuse and name calling, and feels almost… Professional? In a way. It feels like the way people disagree here is less like how things genuinely are on the internet, and more like a disagreement in a workplace. Things stay civil and respectful, nobody’s abusing anyone else.
I’ve also noticed that different opinions can actually coexist here, like you’ll have a post with dozens of comments and 1 of those comments states an opinion, and then somebody with just as many upvotes makes an entirely separate comment with the opposite opinion. You never see that on Reddit, where any comment with an opinion different to whatever the main ones on that thread are will be downvoted into oblivion. Hell, it’s rare to even see a 2 posts in the same subreddit with differing opinions where one hasn’t been downvoted
Not even the fight and the downvote is enough for them. Then it turns into mod complaints and permabans.
And not so long ago, you did get heard, but there was also a 50/50 chance of being called a capitalist pig and a baby killer regardless of what you contributed.
It seems that everyone has found their own corners on Lemmy now, so that is nice.
It’s because it’s not as homogeous a platform since the flood from Reddit. The problem with any small platform isn’t strictly because they’re small, mind you, but a side effect of getting bigger is usually more people and that means more a diverse range of opinions. So the assholes are more drowned out.
It’s not a hard and fast rule but that’s usually what I’ve noticed.
contribute to a discussion and get hard
This is how I read at first, and was like, same bro, same.
Did you head over to lemmynsfw?
Of course I did!
💀 same
thats because we dont have those threads were anyone would elaborate on the upper comment with a stupid reply, and that reply gets replied to with another slightly different but also stupid reply…here we get actual comments and replies…wanna learn alphabet ? go to kindegarten … it helps to have a mature and respectful userbase, which also wouldn’t require much effort to moderate. sometimes it costs nothing to be nice … in the long run we needed access to a social platform afterall, might as well stand by our values and preserve it
Nice meme but please:
You’re right, live and learn I guess
Only one has an alleged pedophile in it and it is not spongebob.
Every single time a meme of a random guy goes viral for no reason, it’s always something like this comes out about it like a week later.
Variety is the spice of life.
This post gets it. It can stink that not every post has a bunch of conversations around it, but oh well.
Where the conversations do happen, they happen organically, and are often quite high quality, comparatively.
We can be thankful that Lemmy is (as of yet) mostly unencumbered with the problem of bots pretending to be legitimate users to drive the conversation specific directions (forum sliding, for example), and due to that we have some quality discussions that are able to happen.
it’s also small enough that you can start beef with specific people 😈
Well, beef is not allowed in my religion, so I’m now offended. Hope you feel good about yourself 😤
Pork is better
you’ve made a powerful enemy today, NegativeLookBehind@kbin.social
You’ve met your match, match
Beef? Pork? To Soylent Green factory with all of yous!
(But not really, the opposite actually, start multiplying already)
(But not really, the opposite actually, start multiplying already)
🥺👉👈
Also, I often recognize usernames posting and commenting.
Same! Which really brings me back to the forum days, which I love. Iron Maiden’s fan club has a forum run like it’s 1999. I adore it.
Literally, the people here are just chef’s kiss I love you lemmings. Stay excellent and party on dudes. 👉😎👉
Also, remember that Lemmy is a small open source project with only two or three full time devs and the rest being from community contributions. Lemmy is also entirely supported by user donations and an NLnet grant. I feel like too many people are coming here and basically expecting corporate level customer service and user experience just without the corporate enshitification, which is not a fair expectation for such a small and grassroots platform.
Lemmy is also very young and very much still in beta, it only started federating like two years ago. Keep that in mind as well.
For me Lemmy has been about 50/50 great discussions/trolls looking to be confrontational about any little thing they can pick apart.
Aside from a few private subs, that’s still a better ratio than Reddit by a long shot.
Main benefit is that I haven’t touched Reddit since RIF went down. That’s a win regardless of what happens to Lemmy.
In all fairness, I’m more of an asshole than a troll. When I’m rude, I’m not doing it for clicks : it’s the real me .
Have you tried, idk, not being an asshole?
Nah, that’s too much work.
I saw a person just trolling any political post they could find.
Damn right. Sure, content flows slower here but at least it’s not 90% bots (though there are some of those as well).
I don’t believe any of you are real
You’ve been in a coma for almost 20 years because of a car accident. We’re trying a new technique. We don’t know where this message will end up in your dream, but we hope we’re getting through. Please wake up.
Sorry, bed’s too comfy
This is a lie! You are not in a coma. Whatever you do, do NOT stare into a mirror for more than five seconds!
Don’t listen to them, look into the mirror! Go on, it’s fun… :)
Convince me reality is any better. I could be in a coma due to the mandatory daily beatings.
Until I’m convinced otherwise, I’m staying in here. In bed, as some other lemming pointed out.
As Lemmy’s only real celebrity, I take offense to that.
I never claimed to be.
If you find out if I’m real, let me know. Either way, I think I’ll feel better knowing. EOL
I’m not, but how do you know you are real?
Define real
I’m trying to post more comments and engage with Lemmy.
Side bar, they made a game called starship troopers: extermination, and it’s great!
I’m doing my part!
Take advantage of enjoying these small communities. This site won’t be small forever
Oh, I’m enjoying it.
You can always split up communities into smaller ones on different instances if they become too big for you.
I totally agree with the title’s sentiment. I don’t mind some free open source rough edges. Lemmy functions great. There’s also a good deal of what looks like genuine interaction. However, I would like to point out that I think there’s a LOT of corporate shills pushing agendas. Some notable ones might be pharmaceutical propaganda and corporate banking with cashless solutions.
I’ve even seen someone trying to shill the “Barbie” movie here, it’s like, we get that it is a really good movie and the lead actress gave an Oscar worthy performance of a lifetime and is also like, really hot and really funny and all, but why would they want to shill this movie on this obscure technology forum, of all places?
Oh you
That’s esteemed… generic Lemmy user who is totally not an award winning character actress to you!
So yeah, I’ve heard it was a good movie too. Like, totally an Oscar worthy performance for sure! ;)
It’s also dangerous to dismiss the idea that propagandists from Russia, China and Co. aren’t active on here. The way Al Jazeera, a Qatari state owned news outlet, is the most trusted source on here when it comes to Israel and Gaza news is kind of weak.
if by “most trusted source on here” u mean “most biased news source that reddit/lemmy love to echo” then I totally agree

Hi guys, Im a propagandist from Russia, China and ‘Co’, how do you do?
Would you like to re-qualify as a propagandist for Ukraine? We offer free borscht!
No thank you im currently given prospects beyond being a crack head living in a tent city, thanks!
We`re never going to escape it, but I hope it’s not as prevalent as it is on Facebook and twitter etc. Last time I heard anything about the topic regarding those platforms it was some surprisingly unimaginable number of corporate accounts. Like 75%. What I mean by that is people being hired by corporations to join social media platforms and pretend to be legit users interacting with others while pushing agendas, attending to damage control or recommending product.
And China. I seem to see the same couple accounts everywhere talking about how great China is in totally unrelated threads.
There’s just meme, news discussions on here. I would like to discuss hobbies like video games, TV series but there are no communities about that
Back in the old BBS days, we didn’t slice ‘n dice human conversation into tens of thousands of rigidly-defined topic bins. We just… talked to each other. The categorization came later as the teeming masses got online, and large forums became unwieldy.
Lemmy is still small, and the slice ‘n dice approach doesn’t work. Just find a community that’s general enough, and post about the things you like.
Before Lemmy I was on Reddit for many years so I know exactly how to help.
Your hobbies suck and you don’t know shit 😉
Sure, being hostile out of nowhere. Great Lemmy user there
I was obviously joking, as people on Reddit sometimes can be like that for now reason (maybe just to pretend to be smarter or something).
I only use reddit for niche hobbies. None of them exist here on lemmy, and I don’t have anywhere close to the time to make and moderate them.
I wouldn’t even worry about moderate them. Just do what you can do.
not yet. There is Retrogaming
Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn’t work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: !retrogaming@lemmy.world
There are definitely videogame communities. Not sure about TV, though. You could always make one.
Idk feels like 90% of comments are about linux Firefox and capitalism I get it you don’t have to keep shoving it down my throat
Mate, why you so uptight for? Honestly, try Firefox on Linux and it will fix all your money issues
I’m using LibreFox because it’s even opener source than Firefox.
I’ll be a millionaire soon!
It’s LibreWolf you uncultured swine
Oh no, you’re not only technically right, you’re obviously right. The worst kind of right - for me.

Then start a community or post other comments. Maybe even block communities that you don’t like e.g. the linux subs or whatever. No one is shoving it down your throat.
Except they are. Every post about Windows getting a new feature is FULL of LiNuX iS bEttEr, and any positive discussion about the topic is downvoted heavily.
Then contact the moderators/admins and start a discussion on the issue. I don’t sub to Windows communities but surely rules could be put into place to avoid?
I just hate this bitching and moaning yet no action is taken. If you want to change things, start change yourself 🤞
My change is visiting Lemmy less, as are most people.
I’m not bitching or moaning, by the way. Didn’t realize pointing out facts and issues currently going on is bitching and moaning lmao
Divisions by zero
Communities Create Post Create Community

Bitching and moaning so a little to strong. Sorry :)
yeah but it’s not just there either, it’s on the regular meme communities as well
Just check the top 25 hot posts on here. None of them have anything to do with linux.
I didn’t say linux though
Same. I don’t mind the programming stuff but this anti-capitalist pro-hamas shit is retarded.
I’d rather be in the muck debating other idiots on Reddit than this circle jerking amongst economically stupid children with no education or life experience.
The other 10% are comments like yours.
God forbid everything you use for entertainment isn’t FOSS, I dare to pay for some of the things I use and you’d think I kicked someone’s child.
Edit: See?
Same, I use Windows and I’m not ashamed for it at all.
Since you’re getting downvoted for this I assume I will get the same treatment lol
Don’t forget the memes, all of them posted by like 3 different users 😆
You could be the fourth but I guess not?
I post once in a while, but I lack the humoristic ability to make good memes
Fair enough.
I felt lemmy was successful the first time I was attacked by a hyperfixated debatelord just like on reddit. If cloning the reddit experience in the fediverse was the goal, for me mission accomplished 👍
Shame you had to end up dealing with that guy. I still think it’s less common hear so far
It can depend on the hour, sometimes.
But that’s honestly anywhere online. There’s a fight to be had damn near anywhere
It’s the best of both worlds. When I’m in a fightin’ mood it’s easy enough to find a troll to mess with. But at the same time I’ve found a lot of lovely small communities where everyone is polite and focused on sharing their experiences rather than attacking others for theirs. It was harder to find communities like that on reddit, they existed, but maybe just not for the interests I held at the time.
mind sharing those communities?
HA! So true!! One thing you can do here you can’t on reddit is pick fights with instances.
