@poVoq wow, even the screen got fixed
This was one of the things I wanted to do at some point, someone beat me to it.
A long time ago I was going to try to get lemmy running on a phone, but the phone I used wasn’t appropriate for running a container with systemd and network server access, so I put it on the backburner until I got another phone for it, but it’s never really come up since.
I did something similar about a year ago, phone is still running Home Assistant and Klipper just fine
Loved the concept of the video: in our desks and pockets we have powerhouses that are underused. I think the solution proposed is too convoluted though as you can get to similar results with Termux without root.
And to those who mention the battery issue, there’re ways to address this problem without the need of a physical mod. Just a few suggestions here:
- Samsung and Pixel have options to limit battery charge to a certain percentage
- If you root the phone they’re quite a few apps or Magisk modules that will limit charge
- If you have a smart plug you can turn on/off the charger based on your battery through a bash script, home assistant etc
I don’t want a video about a broken server
Using phone is dangerous as server because of battery
In the video he explains how he removed the battery and made a direct power connection.
“But then I’d have to watch the video!”
Can serve as emergency power though. Something you would have to add anyway with a serious setup.
But not good long term. A lithium ion battery being constantly drained and charged to 100% will keep the temperature high and wear it out more quickly and the more worn a lithium ion battery is, the more likely it will catch fire or explode.
