I’m using the 16’s btw, so it’s not like the older ones with the physical toggle

My iPad likes to watch TV with me, she’s constantly chiming in with little facts no one asked for.

The only voice function I use is setting timers and I get so frustrated Google wants me to unlock my phone to do so. I am using my voice because my hands are busy. So annoying!

Not to mention the unlock to switch to USB file transfer, default in charging mode. There’s still no root-hack to default to file transfer mode?

Ironically, the reason she can’t is because it’s a physical switch.

If she turned it off for you , then the physical indicator on the switch would be wrong, but she has no ability to move the switch.

Because everyone always goes out and gets the new phone?

        Yes. It’s an issue.

ETA: some quick searches and it seems the most common phone in the 13, with around 60% being the fourteen or older.

OP has one without the switch, so it shouldn’t be the issue. Only happens because a trillion dollar company cannot account for the differences in their handful of devices.

Because apple only maintains phones on an individual level?

And probably literally everyone who writes apps for iOS, as they would now need to account for everyone’s potential behavior.

It’s not “only”. Especially if you had to account for every possible variation in hardware. It’s more complexity and that means more opportunity for bugs.

Too much to ask that an Apple AI knows the basic features of the Apple device it’s running on?

Weird hill to die on, but you do you.

Man, or, when I’m driving through the mountains, “Hey, Siri, play [some song I’ve owned 20 years and have downloaded locally to my device] in my Music app”; “I’m sorry, I’m having trouble getting a connection.” You useless fuck, you never needed a connection back when it was Voice Control; it was only after we moved to the awful Siri future some 15 years ago or whatever that this unbelievably basic, used-to-be-built-in-so-I-know-you-know-how-to-do-it function was replaced with something that has to call out to the Internet to do anything of value.

Siri legit has gotten dumber over the last few years and it only got worse with “Apple Intelligence”.

I used to rely on her a lot more but I can’t trust her for the most basic shit anymore. It’s easier to go into my phone app and pick my contact to call. At least I know it’s not going to do something dumb like call my ex when I said call my mom.

I used to like having the option to tell Siri to “play that album” when playing a random song and she forgot how to do that. Also the whole change to just playing the song instead of playing the song with the album, or remembering my choice to keep repeat on. It’s infuriating because all they had to do was leave it alone.

Didn’t know they removed the toggle. This supports the hypothesis that they plan to remove every physical button and connector / port (which they can’t, at least for the EU version).

Maybe they recognized that most people just leave their phone on silent forever.

They replaced the toggle with a button that you can program to do any one of a selection of things. For example, my phones always on silent so I use this button to turn on/off the flashlight. They have a it a really dumb marketing name ✨ The Action Button ✨

Yes, one thing at a time.

Each action requires a long press. A short press would show you the ringer state if you were looking at the screen, or prompt you to long press if you set it to control other functions.

If my phone is in my pocket, a short press does nothing, it wouldn’t even give me a short vibrate to inform me that the phone is on silent.

This has to be the biggest oversight of this button.

You can make it do a bunch of stuff if you get creative with shortcuts.

My action button silences the media volume (and the phone just in case) and then vibrates the phone to tell me it has done this IF the phone is in a face-down orientation. Otherwise it toggles the flashlight on or off.

I’ve seen people with dozens of actions tied to the button depending on focus mode, orientation, time of day, location, all sorts of stuff.
